Visit a La Huasteca Potosina:
2,400 books distributed to Indian and federal schools

In September 2005, thanks to the kind invitation of the “Adelaida Lafon" Foundation (founded and funded by the Muguerza Hospital in Monterrey), a three-women team from our Sponsor a Book! Association joined their first surgical mission to their newly-opened charity hospital in La Huasteca Potosina.

We journeyed together with their wonderful team of surgeons, doctors and nurses, and while they attended their many patients, we traveled all over to hold book distributions. Our itinerary had been designed by the hospital staff, and in cooperation with the local Social Services  (the DIF)and the area school inspector, we visited Indian and federal schools in 7 communities and left books for 5 more communities.
The Indians we visited were both Tenek (descendants of the Mayas) and Nauhak (descendants of the Aztecs). Kids and teachers wildly applauded the news that we were bringing story books and eagerly received the books. One more time, we were faced with a real penury of books and educational material.
Our last day was a Saturday, and the schools were closed, but word had been spread around to the children to come anyway, as educational storybooks would be distributed for free. We arrived at the last school at 12:30pm, only to find out that the children had been waiting for us since 8:30am, and that about 100 of them had walked 2 hours through difficult mountain paths just to come to receive the books (the school acts as a boarding school during the week, and they had already gone back home for the week-end the night before). Their dedication and commitment to get the books brought tears to our eyes. They were our most enthusiastic little crowd.
